Whispers from African Slave Cargo

So many centuries ago, and Ghost ships are lost to the blood-colored fog—
from the raw backs of weakened black men and women on voyage

We rely on blood-soaked soil
to hold the voices
of our ancestors.

The African slave cargo speaks.

Close your eyes

and inhale the moisture
of dark-brown,
nearly black soil—

a scent unseen
by overseers.

We nurtured cotton
beneath the snap
of a worn whip.

A rich, earthy smell,

left hidden deep
by our ancestors,

rising into the air
for descendants alone
to recognize.

Notes of decaying leaves,
roots,
and organic matter—

generations of vegetation
breaking down
into memory.

A slightly sweet,
damp scent
after rain,

as if the earth itself
still remembers.

In gardens,

back home,

and in the forever home
where we come to rest,

flesh melts away.

Fragile bones
and chains dissolve

into organic soil.

The ground
my body plowed

now receives me.

Chains gone,

I am free.

Yet I wander forever—

a stranger
to Africa, too,

as I am here.

And still,

from the dark earth,

the voices rise—

the breath of ancestors

carried on the wind.

Made up of 19 lines and five stanzas of three lines goes by the name of Villanelle. Limerick creations are funny and at times can be rude. Ode Musically performed pieces are nice on the ears. Particular subject Elegy is clear and direct. Last but not least there is Ballad that typically tells a dramatic emotional story.
